Inclusion
Core Values Photo Gallery
We learned how to be truly more inclusive by working closely with leaders in traditionally underserved areas within our city. By forging these new relationships, we created a healthier and more empowered community. We brought testing and vaccines to vulnerable populations, fulfilling our mission of service, and advocated for those who might not have had access to treatments and care. The pandemic highlighted new areas of opportunity, and we’re thankful for the compassionate and empathetic care providers who stepped up and stepped into that role. We’re better for it.

Family Discovery Time is a new monthly program at the Florida Museum of Natural History introducing Head Start families to the Discovery Zone as well as the Museum. This important partnership is focused on developing community relationships to increase accessibility and inclusivity in all our programming. Our first teacher training was a huge success, and we have two more in the works. This program will help bridge the gap in science learning in our underrepresented communities. © Florida Museum, Photo by Kristen Grace

“To me, Black in Natural History Museums is about building our own space so that we can thrive and not just survive,” said Flemming, founder of #BlackInNHMS and a doctoral student in the University of Florida’s department of biology and an iDigBio research assistant. “We’re trying to create a community and find ways we can work together and engage people.” © Florida Museum, Photo by Kristen Grace

Century Tower lit by blue light to honor health care workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic was a reminder to all of the self-sacrifice and burdens those workers bear for not only the UF community but all citizens. UF Health is essential to the overall UF academic mission and blue light adorning the tower offered a stark reminder of their inclusion in the university’s academic and research mission, and a major reason why UF is now a top five public institution. © 2020 UF/IFAS Communications, Photo by Tyler Jones
During the summer of 2020, while everyone was still attempting to adjust to the realities of the pandemic, there was an explosion of protests after the killing of George Floyd. In a demonstration of solidarity with the social justice movement, faculty, staff, and students held a White Coats for Black Lives demonstration in the Academic Health Center. The idea of inclusion is core to the approach that the UF College of Medicine takes in the education of future clinicians and researchers. The pandemic brought many challenges but also opportunities to facilitate outreach by clinicians along with medical students into areas that are historically underserved. The UF College of Medicine student service corps worked with the Department of Health to offer COVID-19 testing to residents of East Gainesville in May 2020 to ensure those who may not have otherwise had access to testing could get tested.
